Hi. My name is Ken Smith. Every week I profile other musicians, singers and bands playing the Seattle music scene.

Episodes

The Starlings musical blend of folk, country and roots falls under the broad category of Americana. While they've only been a band for about a year, they have already released an album, which has been well recieved by both radio and the public. Joy Mills and Tom Parker, the main singers and songwriters of the band, sit down with Ken for a chat their music and their songwriting process.

Bogey Vujkov (pronounced voo-ey kov) is a classically trained pianist from the former Yugoslavia. He emigrated to the United States as a small child, and it was while he was serving his new country in the Army that his musical journey took a turn towards jazz. Today he is a session player and a teacher, and has a new self-released album titled "Comin' Up For Air." He talks about all this and more in this interview.

Thee Emergency plays the kind of rock that dares you to try to stand still. It's loud and fast and fun -- kind of like band members Dita Vox and Sonic Smith who sit in with Ken for a laugh-filled conversation about how they got together, their new album and why they miss Detroit.

Tim Seely likes his independence. If a band member or two can't play a show, he plays it with half a band. Or he plays it solo. When Tim couldn't find a label right away to put out his album, he put it out himself. Tim even self-recorded some of his songs, playing all the instruments. He talks about his independent style, his music and more in this interview.

Jason Webley plays music that is hard not to love. His songs, which he plays mostly on his accordian, have a distinct Eastern European flavor to them, although spiced up a bit with a touch of punk. In this interview, Webley talks about his music, how he creates it and how it has taken him all over the world.

The Boss Martians may have had some personnel changes over the years, but that hasn't stopped them from doing what they love: playing music. Singer/guitarist Evan Foster and drummer Tom Caviezel talk about the latest line-up (which is about a year old), their relentless touring schedule (which includes festivals across the country and Europe) and recording their new album with legendary producer Jack Endino.

Amy Stolzenbach is a singer/songwriter, and the founder of the all-female AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belles. She sits down to discuss new record coming out this fall (on which she plays all the instruments as well as sings), and why now is a good time for her to focus on her music. Amy also talks about her meeting with guitar hero Angus Young.

Mon Frere flew onto the scene after winning EMP's Sound Off! competition in 2004. Now they have a new record, a new drummer, and a huge tour they are about to embark on. They sit down to chat about these things, and what they have planned for the future.

Eric Maher and Deiter Segura, 2/7 of reggae band Nuffsed, drop by to talk about their new album "Ignite The Fuse" and their excitement over working in Jamaica at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studios with reggae superstar Turbulence.

Mercir

Mercir is an electronic band with indie rock sensibilties. They write songs with familar rock structures but with experimental sounds and beats. Colin Johnson and Joel Eby, two of Mercir's four members, join Ken to talk about their music and how they come up with it.

Danny McCarthy and Dillin Quent make up the electronic duo Theory in Motion. They have a big gig coming up at the Premier, and they drop by to talk about it and their new record coming out later this year.

RA Scion is the vocal half of the hip-hop duo Common Market; Sabzi is the DJ. This interview was supposed to be with both of them but Sabzi overslept and missed the appointment. But it's all good, though, because that gave RA Scion more time to discuss his many thoughts on hip-hop music and the community around it, and why it's more important for his music to be listened to and understood, rather than just heard.
