Congress struggled with the proposed $700 billion bailout plan last week. The cost per taxpayer – about $2500. William Greider, political journalist and National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation, says Paulson's proposal is a "historic swindle." Why? Greider writes that tax payers "are the naked investors in this drama, asked to put up many billions to rescue Wall Street firms with nothing more than a vague promise it will save the Republic."
